LOOKING FOR PASHA Was it her blond her, cut medium to short in length; or was it the way she looked on a forward edge? Was it the way she would sometimes cry, as if there was no in between those two extremes of exulation and desolation? Was it a large leopard skin handbag slung over her shoulder and Versace sunglasses, black and impenetrable? What was it about her that so captivated all of us? What is her essence? In spite of her enforced absence from professional skating competitions this past year, it is not an uncommon occurrence to observe any number of Pasha Grishuk lookalikes at various skating events. And so it was at the most recent Pacific Coast Sectional Championships, in San Jose, California. If not the two-time and reigning queen of Olympic ice dance in the flesh, her facsimiles were present. From my vantage-point in the second floor bleachers at the Ice Centre of San Jose, I happened to espy one young woman in particular as she and her partner prepared to take the ice with another couple for a Tuesday night practice session preceding the first day of the competition. Her hair was blonde and pulled back into a pony-tale. Something about her caught my attention. Though not the tall, long-legged ice dancer that one has grown accustomed to seeing on the world stage, she was very attractice in form. I should not presume to critique her skating. Be that as it may, I was only interested in the performer. And in that regard, there was something about her; perhaps it was the face I thought. Her partner was not the typical protagonist. His hair was slightly darker than hers, and was cut short as is like a crew-cut in the military fashion. A smile was not readily apparent, rather something more akin to a suspicious stare, as if he were on the lookout for some perfidious conduct. Both were atypical in appearance and behavior, inasmuch as they did not appear to be attempting to conform to an accepted standard, either by their actions or mannerisms. I perceived them as having something to say and wanting to say it in their own way. So they stepped onto the ice with another couple, and began to practice a compulsory dance--a polka. Eventually, they would perform parts of their free dance. A flare for the dramatic accentuated their movements, even as they elicited the audience's attention with fan-fared bows creatively choreographed as like a free dance. I found myself instantaneously struck by an enigmatic smile. His was no more than implied, a begrudging concession to accepted decorum. Hers captivated and tantalized the imagination with a hint of suggestion. There would be merely two couples competing. The free dance was scheduled as the last event on the final evening of the competition, the senior ladies' long program just preceding it. I noticed her early arrival while the latter event was still in progress. With her partner, she began to stretch and warm-up in a small area designated for that use on the second floor beside the packed bleachers. Ultimately, they began to practice some of the moves they intended to perform on the ice. As I first observed her, she and her partner were the only competitors in the area; nevertheless, they were compelled to share that space with various young people ambling around them, either practicing at or pretending to be skaters. The extra activity did not seem to deter them in any way as each was in a fully concentrated state, and only broke from the routine to intermittently confer with their coach or to simply relax a bit. Her demeanor was staunchly serious and completely belied the confident almost arrogant facade of sensuality that I had first observed on the ice just that prior Tuesday. It reminded me of how easy it is to miscontrue a person, to misinterpret an outward appearance affected for a performance as the being that resides within. It was obvious to me that she was a very "hard worker." As the last few competitors in the ladies' singles concluded, the ice dancers gathered at rink side and began to pace back and forth in nervous anticipation. The other ice dance couple did not make an appearance upstairs, rather arrived just shortly before the competition was to begin. The majority of the crowd began to vacate the bleachers at the conclusion of the ladies' event, leaving only a smattering intent upon watching the ice dancers. Both couples took the ice and began to warm-up. The young lady and her partner would be first to skate. The free dance they were to perform was what I would characterize as theatrical in style, in that the choreography seemed to be designed to convey a mood, rather than to simply demonstrate skating technique. However abstract, it all seemed to have a meaning. Her performance evoked passion and sensuality, and seemed to me to be an open expression of herself as a young woman. I was mesmerized. I had not expected to see this kind of dramatic expressiveness in a sectional ice dance competition in North America. The other couple's performance was more traditionally ballroom, as it appeared to be ostensibly a demonstration of technique. There were a number of interesting lifts in their free dance and one in particular that I had seen before. In the second program at the now infamous 1998 World Pro ice dance competition, Pasha Grishuk, in a lift, was being supported in a semi-inverted position with her back arched and her face just off of the ice surface. Her partner proceeded to then pull her up into him, to cradle her within his arms, and as their visages bowed inward and met, she had placed her hand on the nape of his neck, just so. A fleeting instant and it was past but the effect for me resonated like the ringing of a cathedral bell. Such small things should never be underestimated. The young lady held on to her partner with her hand placed, meticulously, just so, and the effect was equally miraculous. I did not perceive it as an obvious reenactment. Unfortunately, another of thier lifts did not work as well as they would have liked. As she was suspended between his legs, something happened and he collapsed on top of her. I was stunned by the sudden violence of it. However, they quickly recovered and proceeded to perform the remainder of their program as if nothing had happened. At its conclusion, they presented themselves to the judges and audience in the manner that I have previously described, and then proceeded to leave the ice. Once off of the ice surface, and out of the spotlight, she suddenly broke down and began to sob uncontrollably. It appeared that she might have impacted the ice with her chin. There was no blood but that area was garnering all of the attention, or so it seemed. She wept openly and inconsolably, and had to be physically supported by someone as they proceeded out of my view under the rim of the balcony. That was The last I saw of her. Her name is Disa Steiber and his is Patrick Connolly. Since only two couples competed, both apparently qualified for nationals. So they should be competing in Cleveland next week, for those who might be interested. Pasha Grishuk is not Russian; she is uniquely American. Disa Steiber, Norma Jean Baker and Oksana Gritschuk are the stuff from which dreams are made. Whether from this country's far-flung regions or from foreign shores, they arise, out of the masses, by the power of their imagination, their passion, and their dreams, to recreate themselves into an embodiment of the "American Dream." May that hope and spirit survive, that did create her, and that continues to live in others, as I discovered just weeks ago. I was not looking for Pasha but I found her anyway--in the rapturous charm of one young lady with a similar dream. Gene Meyers

Pasha, you and your family have become like family to me and ther isn’t a day that goes by that I don't thank God for bringing you in my life. My daughter Suzanna and I talked to Pasha a long time on the telephone yesterday. It was so wonderful to hear her voice. She sounded wonderful and we laughed a lot and talked about old times. It reminded me how much I miss seeing her every day and how luc y California is to have her. I cant wait to see her skate again no matter if it is singles, dance or anything else. Either way I am happy she seems well and laughed a lot. For those of you at Ice Chalet I can only say. Learn all you can from her. She is a treasure of Ice Skating and a fine person tht loves to share what she has learned. Dont waste a great opportunity. Hi everyone, Sorry I have not written I have been so busy. I have been working on my sites there are 3 of them now. I had to change my address on my main site. Hello to Pasha, and hello to all fans of Pasha. Posted on Heather's TV Schedule are the dates that Pasha's appearance and singles skate on Beverly Hills 90210 will be rerun. For all of us who missed the show when it was first shown, this is wonderful news Look for Pasha on Sunday, January 16th from 5 to 6 P.M., and again on Saturday, January 22nd IN THE MORNING from 10 to 11 A.M. This program will be shown on the Fox Network. For me, I will be off from work on the 16th, so I will be able to tape the show. Love to all, Bev

What kind of music do you like? Also we like to wish the professional skating for the next MILLENNIUM fresh blood and searching, creative minds. In this connection I'd like to share some thoughts about World Profs which I watched two days ago. The overall mark is more or less "deja vu", nothing new. But the hope for something new was given to us by one of the best male skaters of our century Alexei Urmanov and the charismatic french champion Phillipe Candeloro, they literally "stole" the show. They both brought to the ice a piece of hist ry and made people breathless.Alexei impeccable as usual was portraying an 18 century alchemist, who created elixir for eternal youth and immortality.Phillipe, using sound effects and narrative part skated Brave heart, Scottish national hero, who fought nd died for the independence of Scotland. BTW Urmanov was sitting at the bench with his mum, his couch was absent, she was holding his hand, almost crying while they announced the marks after his performance, very touching moment. I was just thinking that professional figure skating could be such a powerful educational tool, where you learn new things through the pleasure of watching skating. In the near future hopefully more talented and intelligent skaters will come up with inno ative ideas. lots of love to all people posting here or just coming to read. I know, I am toooooo late, but I had not other possibility to use internet be ore. Have wonderful holidays! Svilen. The day I would meet PASHA there aroused an odd kind of excitement I have seldom felt before. Me, being a sportsman myself, was about to face the double Olympic Champion in ice-skating – I somehow felt a deep respect before the meeting, before the person f PASHA herself. So it turned out to be a very pleasant, friendly and even cheerful happening thus both the fans and PASHA were, as far as I can judge over it, in high spirits and little jokes and cheerful glances pepped up the atmosphere. The weather that day was as nice as one can imagine by this time of the year, so the plenty of sunshine was used by the fans for numerous of snapshots during which the faces in front of the camera lenses smirked against the glistening sunlight. The general mood occupied a smile on every ace – both due to the sun and the warm current of feelings, generated in the listeners by the words of Pasha. She talked about her good times, in the past, as she used to skate for the first time; then about her inner state around her greatest accomplishm nts, ever been seen on ice – the Olympic Games Champion Titles in two successive periods; she spoke about the present – her acting in films and the aims, she has set herself, her striving for what fulfills her with joy. An astounding aspect of her search or fulfillment is that her own joy-giving to the others – by skating, acting, or whatever else, represents a major factor of her inner fulfillment. A statement easy to believe, thus there is nothing of the superficial and often super-fluous pomp of the elebrities about her – she is real and natural, characteristics, which lightly evoke positive inclination in the public. The bread interest about PASHA´s personality was witnessed by the variety of countries, the fans came from that day: there were several Dutchmen, Asians, Russians and Germans from regions afar. They all have found the neatly arranged hall in the core of t e little town of Sarstedt in the north of Germany – they have burdened a couple of days´ trip upon themselves for the sake of spending several hours in the company of Pasha. I really thought myself lucky, since I live just a pair of minutes away from that place. But not only for that reason: the happening on that day was not just a meeting between a star and her fans, as they use to take place in general, as one imagines them they do – the case was different: I was surely not the only visitor who went home enriched. Enriched by the story of so young and though so experienced a person, the presence of a strong personality which lightly and invisibly touched a cord in the inner sensibility of every one. Having attended the meeting with PASHA gave me and the public, I reckon, an intense experience about the difference between just wishing things to fulfill and the guts to make the mere wishing come true; it needs a lot more than just wishful thinking, it eeds deeds, which are seldom comfortable. I still wonder where such outstanding personalities like PASHA take the strength from so as to accomplish this – is it inspiration, or the need to communicate with the broad public in their own, ingenious way?

There were many celebrities in the crowd. He specializes in moderne design; lot's of metallic fabrics permeate thru his collection - which contains a lingerie line too!.::: The reason that Pasha choose to do this (in her own word's):::: " All monies go to very sick children. I did this for charity and because I love children very much. It was my Xmas gift to them. Hello dear friends and dear Pasha, How are you doing, are you happy and healthy? This afternoon I was so sad because I watched my tapes from World Prof 1998... It was painful watching G/P skating with different partners, but my God how GOOD were they, so emotional, so deep skating, you ould see their souls!! Now I am thinking that only Pasha and Evgeny, dance/skate with their souls FIRST.... How do they do that?! May be they just take all the pain, love, hate, tenderness out of their hearts, throw it on the ice and dance....... It's ad that their unique team died so early, without even reaching the maturity of their souls. We lost so much... Hello to all of our friends! Sorry we haven't written lateley, with Christmas and Work and all, It just gets sooo... crazy at this time of year. Pasha, what are you doing for new years eve? This is a very exciting one, with the Millenium and all, but kind nerveracking also, with the Y2K Bug thing. Andy and I are staying home for new years eve. Andy was born on new years eve, 1990 and let me tell you, Not a great day to be having a baby! The nurses just didn't seem as attentive as normal. But, I've got a g eat little boy who has a pretty cool birthday! What are some of you all doing for new years? Well, Andy and I wish everybody a very blessed Christmas and a wonderfull New Year! Claire,Thank you for your kind words. Sometimes many people tell you something or you know and understand something with your head, but you don't necessarily believe it with your heart. When Pasha said those words to me it was the first time I actually be ieved them. She was the first one who got through to me and I will always be grateful to her for that.

Hello to everyone! I would like to thank Pasha for the nice Christmas card she sent me. I received it yesterday (13 Dec) and was really surprised & at the same time very happy about it. On the envelope is a nice printed picture of Pasha wearing an a gel costume (it's the same picture on the front page of Pasha's homepage). On top of the Christmas card is her picture wearing this angel outfit (same picture like the one on the envelope)with a Christmas greeting on the background. Inside the card i a picture of her dressed in white wearing her Olympic medals. Of course there was a nice message written on the card. That was really a nice gesture from Pasha but what really touched me so much was the surprise gift which was enclosed in the envelope Sorry but I don't want to reveal what it was but all I can say is that: Pasha is so generous, kind, thoughtful, selfless, but most of all- she is a woman with a golden heart. Please say a little prayer for my friend Andrey. She has a very serious knee injury and will be skating tomorrow in Pac Coast to qualify for national, she is in so much pain. I hurt so bad for her.
